Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. This was officially unveiled in February, 2010. Important feature in Windows Phone 7 is the new user interface, which is based on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 design system Metro. Home screen of the UI is built with live tiles that are linked to applications, features and other items including contacts and media items. Also, an on-screen virtual keyboard is provided for inputting text. This includes features like spell checking and word prediction. The web browser in Windows Phone 7 is the Internet Explorer Mobile. The browser can support up to six tabs in parallel. The browser also allows saving pictures on web pages, sharing web pages via emails among other features. Microsoft also claims that they would update the Windows Phone 7 web browser independent of the operating system. When it comes to multimedia, Windows Phone 7 provides an application called Zune, which provides entertainment as well as facilities to synchronize phone and PC. Additionally, Windows Phone 7 provides two separate hubs for music and video. These hubs play music/ video, podcasts and allow the users to buy or rent music through Zune Marketplace. Picture hub allows the user to view the Facebook and Windows Live photo albums with the photos taken by the camera.

Mango (Windows Phone 7.1)

As mentioned earlier, Mango is a major software update for Windows Phone 7. Mango update is intended to expand the features of Windows Phone 7 and attract more users. New features provided by Mango include Bing Audio, Bing Vision, Turn-by-Turn navigation and SMS Dictation. In addition to these features Mango adds Bing image search and the Windows Live Messenger is integrated in to People hub, where it will provide the ability to send instant messages directly to people in the contact list.
