Difference Between Weft and Warp
Table of Contents
Where terminologies like knitting and weaving are used Weft and Warp are always there to enhance the topic of creativity. Though the era has been changed people are less likely to wear homemade, home-stitched outfits but still those who do need to be familiar with the terms Weft and Wrap. Here we are highlighting some points of difference between the two.
Weft vs Warp
The main difference between Weft and Warp is the Length and Width of a thread used to create a dress. The weft is a unique series of threads used in making a dress that moves in a pattern. Warp is a thread series that moves up and down. In a wool Yarn, Weft moves back and forth, and Warp moves upside down.
The term Weft refers to the thread series that moves back and forth in a pattern using a continuous yarn of wool. It uses circular as well as flat fabrics in the knitting procedure along with three fundamentals namely rib knitting, plain knitting, and purl knitting for creating a piece of art with the help of woolen threads.
The term Warp refers to the thread series that moves front-back, front-back continuously in the yarn of wool to create a design in the dress. In the Warp technique, needles move concurrently with all the yarn. It works quickly up and down for creating a piece of art. There is 6 type of stitches in Warp.
Comparison Table Between Weft and Warp
Parameters of Comparison | Weft | Warp |
Meaning | A method of knitting where thread moves front and back. | A method of knitting where the thread series moves in pattern through Warp. |
Direction. | In Weft the wool yarn runs in the direction of back and forth. | In Warp, the wool yarn runs in the direction of up and down. |
Needles | In Weft knitting the needles work through a series of each wool yarn. | In Warp knitting, the needles work concurrently for all wool yarn. |
Stitches. | The Weft knitting has three fundamental stitches. | The Warp knitting has six fundamental stitches. |
Machine Usage | In Weft knitting there is less use of machinery. | In Warp knitting, it is mainly done by machinery. |
What is Weft?
The Weft is a basic component that makes fabric using wool thread or yarn which is further converted into wearables. The word Weft is derived from the English word Weave which means knitting of fabric using yarn or thread. The weft is usually created from the spun fiber which we usually do at home using pair of needles. It is the simplest way of making fabric using the weft knitting method.
In the Weft knitting method generally, loops are created horizontally from a single type of woolen yarn. These looped can be interlinked in round or flat shapes. Using the Weft method the string of thread is fed at a right angle using needles to form rows. Each new row is connected with the previous row in the fabric. It is very obvious to guess that the Weft method is the simplest way of knitting.
Some common creations from the Weft weaving technique are tailored garments and seamless hosiery. Weft thread leads to less strain in the fabric therefore they are preferred for their appearance instead of the quality of strength. How Weft loops are created and designed will decide the final look of the dress or outfit created.
What is Warp?
The term Warp is referred to as a basic component of the weaving method to produce a fabric. The string of threads moving vertically in the loom is called Warp. It requires better quality of thread material as compared to Weft since there are high chances of strain in Warp method knitting hence strong fabric would be required.
The longitude set in the final piece of fabric or dress material is called Warp because strings are attached vertically. The wrap method is used when threads are moving in the length of the fabric. Both sequential and interlinked threads are mixed and matched in the Warp method of knitting while forming a dress or fabric. Every loop is created using a different set of woolen yarn to form a fabric with the help of the Warp method. It is the fastest method to convert thread into fabric since we all wear clothes and they are made up of the basic element of weaving which is Wrap.
The Wrap technique use machined to create structures, patterns, or designs over the fabric which are useful in the final look of fabric or dress material. Yarn may move ZigZac therefore Warp is generally applied over the machine to maintain the shape of fabric or dress.
Main Differences Between Weft and Warp
Conclusion
For weaving fabrics and garments both Warp and Weft are very good techniques of knitting for beginners as similar kinds of patterns are created to make designs flawless. The intermeshing of loops, use of needles are fun activities in winters to make woolen garments for clothing. There are also several variations in the knitting methods but Weft and Warp are preferred as they are comparatively simple to make.
Woven fabric is created with the help of both methods Weft and Warp as they are the basic textile terminologies. Lengthwise thread movement is Warp on the contrary Traverse is Weft. They both play a very important role in making fabric using yarn. The weft is generally easy to pull threads from the fabric.
