Sudan and Southern Sudan have many political issues which separate them. Many of us are really confused if Sudan and Southern Sudan are two countries or a single country. They are going to be two different countries in 2011 with Southern Sudan separating from the mainland.

Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It has a long history which has witnessed two civil wars. The first civil war continued for 17 long years between 1955 and 1972. The second civil war started in 1983 and lasted until 2005. The civil wars were mainly based on economic, ethnic, and religious differences. The second civil war came to an end after the Sudanese government entered into an agreement with the rebels of the southern region.

The south Sudanese people fought a war against the government for an independent country. South Sudan is likely to be announced an independent country in 2011. Though some political figures argue that the country should not be separated, the political leaders in Southern Sudan are against a united, democratic, and secular Sudan.

When speaking of religious beliefs, the people of Southern Sudan are Christians whereas the people in Sudan are not.

Sudan is part of the United Nations since 1956 whereas Southern Sudan is yet to become a part of it.

Sudan is bordered on the north by Egypt, northeast by the Red Sea, the east by Ethiopia and Eritrea, the southeast by Uganda and Kenya, southwest by Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo, west by Chad and northeast by Libya.

Southern Sudan, as the name signifies, is towards the southern part of the country. On the east, it is bordered by Ethiopia, the south by Uganda, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the west by Central African Republic.

Khartoum is the capital of Sudan, and Juba is going to be the capital of Southern Sudan.
