Lysosome vs Peroxisome
The cell is the basic unit of life as we all know. It was discovered during 1600’s by Sir Robert Hooke. Upon the discovery of cells, man was able to know that when cells are grouped together, they form tissues. Then, when tissues are grouped together, they become muscles. When muscles are grouped together, they become an organ. And when organs are grouped together, they become a body system. This explains how a cell becomes the basic unit of life.
Cells have varying parts and functions. An example is the mitochondria which is known as the power house of the cell. Since it is the power house, it is responsible in producing ATP or adenosine triphosphate for energy that will be used by the organelles of the cell. Under the parts that comprise a cell are the lysosomes and peroxisomes. Let us find out the differences.
Lysosomes are initially responsible for the intracellular digestion of the cells. It’s like these structures are the digestive system of the cells. Lysosomes are said to be common in the cells of animals and very small or rare in plants. Lysosomes are also beneficial in our bodies. They can also be found in white blood cells. Their function is that these lysosomes produce some contents that would surround and digest the bacteria and then kill it.
Peroxisomes, on the other hand, are responsible for the protection of the cell against a major toxic substance which also comes within from the cell. This toxic substance is hydrogen peroxide. Peroxisomes guard the cells from their own production of this harmful substance. Peroxisomes do this by destroying hydrogen peroxide and converting this into water and oxygen. However, when hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria, it only protects the cell from the hydrogen peroxide produced but not the bacteria.

Peroxisomes, on the other hand, contain three oxidative enzymes such as catalase, D-amino acid oxidase, and uric acid oxidase. Lysosomes were discovered in the 1960’s by Christian de Duve, a Belgian cytologist. Mr. Rhodin, on the other hand, first described peroxisomes in 1954.
