Difference Between English and Spanish

There are many languages spoken all over the world. Some are ancient, while some are new. There is a possibility of discovering new languages too. Languages depend upon the place or religion mostly. But few languages are spoken all over the world. Example of such languages is English and Spanish. Both of them are old languages and among the official languages of many countries.

Both of the languages have many similarities, and this is also the reason why not many people are aware of the difference among them. Understanding the difference is important as confusion among them can create a bad impression and is not good for a career sometimes too.

English vs Spanish

The main difference between English and Spanish is that in Spanish, it is difficult to memorize different conjugations of verbs, whereas it is easier in English. In Spanish, it is easier to use a particular sentence structure for both a statement and a question, while in English, it is difficult to do so. In English, the prepositions play an important role, and there are many prepositions, and they have to be used perfectly considering several factors, while in Spanish, there are few prepositions that have to be considered. There is a misconception that Spanish has complex spellings, but it’s not true. English has some spellings that can’t be told by the sound of it, while Spanish spellings can be told by its sound easily.

English is the most spoken language all over the world. It is an Indo-European language. It has been changed and modified. English can also be categorized into different categories. Most countries have English as one of the official languages. Every noun does not have gender in English, and the usage of adjectives is quite easy.

Spanish was originated in the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. It is mainly spoken in America and Spain, and most of this language is derived from Latin. It is very similar to the English language, but some people consider it easier as spelling its words is way easier along with other grammar.

What is English?

English is the most spoken and known language after Spanish and Chinese in the world. It was originated from the present Netherlands and northwest Germany. There are long and short types of words that can be treated as a whole sentence. Each year more than 3000 words are added to the English dictionary. And the most common word in it is you and I. 

It is also said to be the happiest language. One-fourth of the world’s population can speak English. Many people have a misconception that English is the official language of the United States which is not true.  

Some people find it difficult to arrange the words along with prepositions and suffixes as there are many rules in this language that has to be kept in mind. Also, a person who speaks English fluently might not be able to write it as most to fits word spell different and sound different as many of its alphabets have different sounds depending upon the word as a whole.

There are many types of English, such as British and American English. There is only a slight difference in both of them, which is mainly in the written part. 

What is Spanish?

As per the surveys, Spanish is in the 2nd position on the list of most spoken languages. It belongs to the same family as of English language, and in fact, it is spoken by more people than the English language.

Most of its words are derived from Latin, and there is no hard proof of how old this is, but it is believed it dates back to at least the 13th century. It is also called español and sometimes Castellano by some people. Spanish is said to be the easiest language when it comes to writing, as most of its words spell the same as they sound. It is also called a romance language. It is mostly spoken in Spain, the USA, and many other countries where it is also an official language.

Many students like to study Spanish as it is spoken by many and contribute to maximizing their reach and make the communication easy, but it is believed that Spanish speakers can also talk in English easily, although they find it difficult to pronounce or write it for them.

Main Differences Between English and Spanish

  • In the English language, gender is not considered before applying or using an article, whereas, in Spanish, gender is always considered before using any article. Therefore both of the languages have different rules. In Spanish, it is based on gender.
  • In terms of the alphabet, English and Spanish are similar, but still, there are differences in terms of sounds, letters, and consonants. Spanish has more letters in comparison while English has fewer letters, and there as 24 consonants in the English language while it is 22 in the case of Spanish. The English language has more sounds in comparison to Spanish.
  • When it comes to adjectives and nouns, both languages have different rules and usage. English adjective is used before the noun, whereas in Spanish, it is used by the noun, there are some exceptions to this, but mostly the adjective is written after the noun, for example, car beautiful.
  • The important difference that makes English different from Spanish is the presence of gender. In Spanish, every noun has a gender. For example, mom, apple, scissors are feminine in Spanish, whereas in English, not all of them have gender. Only mom is considered feminine.
  • Usage of suffixes is a lot easier in Spanish as compared to English. In English, it is influenced by present, past, and past participles. You have to think properly about the perfect suffixes in English before using them, whereas –ar, -er, or –ir are the suffixes used in the Spanish language mainly.
  • In terms of negation also, English is a complex language. Several verbs and suffixes can create confusion in negating the words, whereas, in the Spanish language, it is much easier, as the presence of no before the verb indicates the negation in a sentence.

    Therefore, with all the information and differences, there should not be any confusion between both. The confusion arises as they have similarities such as, both of them have same letters, the easy difference between most of the language is the different letters while this is not the case with English and Spanish they share same letters, both languages also have some same words which contribute the most in confusion, both languages have the same syntax, both languages add same letters at the end of the words to pluralize them, both of them have contractions, last but not least some capitalization or punctuation rules are also same in English and Spanish.
