Buddhism and Sikhism are religions that are widely followed the world over. Though these two religions have their origins in the Indian subcontinent, they are different in many respects such as belief, deity, means of salvation and scriptures.

When the two religions are compared, Sikhism is the youngest religion in the world. Buddhism dates back to 530 BC whereas Sikhism dates back to the 15th century.

A Dharmic religion, Buddhism centres round the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha, who is believed to be Enlightened One. Sikhism centers round the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and ten successive Gurus.

When comparing the concept of deities between the two religions, Buddhism believes in deities that are enlightened whereas Sikhism believes in a single God and the teachings of the Gurus.

According to Buddhism, a man gets salvation by practicing vipassana and samadhi meditations. Samadhi prepares the mind for vipassana, which allows the follower to see life’s four noble truths. As per Sikhism, a person gets salvation if he worships God, performs good deeds and also do community service. A person should also fight the five evils ‘“ Anger, Ego, Greed, Attachment and Lust.

When looking at the scriptures, Buddhism is based on Tipitaka and Sutras. On the other hand, Sikhism is based on the Guru Grant Sahib.

When the place of worship of the followers of Buddhism is called Temple or Pagoda, the places of worship of the followers of Sikhism are Gurudwaras.

When talking of the presence of the two religious believers, it can be seen that Buddhism is popular in Sri Lanka, East Asia and South East Asia. Sikhism is predominantly seen in Punjab in India.
