Difference Between Auricle and Ventricle
Table of Contents
Main Difference
The main difference between Auricle and Ventricle is that Auricle is part of heart chamber called atria and Ventricle is the heart chamber.
Auricle vs. Ventricle
The auricle is part of atria, which is a chamber of the heart. On the other hand, Ventricle is itself a chamber of the heart. The auricle is present one in each atrium while Ventricle is two in number in heart. The auricle is ear-like structure, on the other hand, Right Ventricle looks triangular and left ventricle looks conical in shape. Auricles are appendages, whereas Ventricle is muscular. Auricle assists atria in holding a large amount of blood; on the other hand, Ventricle plays a major physiological function. Auricle disorder keeps the heart in working, on the other hand; ventricle disorder disturbs the working of the heart.

What is Auricle?
The auricle is the structure found in the atria. In the past, the auricle and atrium were used for the upper chamber of the heart, and even some people use this terminology interchangeably. Actually, the auricle is the part of the structure of the atrium, the term atrium is used for the chambers of the heart which receive the blood. There are two atria in the human body, and they are named as the right atrium and left atrium. The left atrium receives blood from the lungs, and the right atrium receives the blood from the venous circulation. The term atrial appendages are also used for the auricle. The auricle is the conical muscular pouch which resembles ear. Simply auricles are ear-like projections which arise from atria. Auricles are named according to their shape because of their resemblance to a dog’s ear. Two auricles are found in the human heart. Each auricle arises from each side of atria. Auricles are attached to the interior surface of outer walls of atria. The auricles increase the capacity of atria for holding the blood, and this is the main purpose of the auricles.
What is Ventricle?
The ventricle is the chamber of the heart that lies at the bottom of the heart in human and is a part of a double circulatory system. Ventricle receives blood from the atrium and sends towards body and lungs. There are two ventricles in the heart, and they are named as right ventricle and left ventricle according to their location in the body. The left ventricle is considered the largest and strongest chamber in the heart. The left ventricle wall is approximately half-inch thick, and they are strong enough to push the blood to the systemic circulation through the aortic valve. The right ventricle pushes blood towards the lungs through pulmonary valves. There are two terms which are used relative to ventricles, and these are interventricles and intraventricular. The term inter-ventricles means between the ventricles and intraventricular means within one ventricle. Ventricle always generates higher blood pressure relative to the other two chambers of the heart called atria. The inner walls of the ventricle are covered by the trabeculae carneae which have further two types. Trabeculae carneae is not present at conus arteriosus in the left ventricle.
The right ventricle and left ventricle are equal in size, and the upper front surface of the right ventricle is round and convex. The front surface of the right ventricle forms the major part of the sternocostal surface in the heart. The lower surface of the right ventricle is flat. The left ventricle is more in length than the right ventricle, and its shape is conical relative to the right ventricle. Left ventricle constitutes the small part of the sternocostal surface. Right ventricle looks like triangular, and it extends from apex of the heart to the tricuspid valve. The walls of the right ventricle are thick at the apex of the heart and thin towards the atrium.
Key Differences
Conclusion
The main conclusion of the above discussion is that auricle is part of the chamber of the heart called atria, and ventricle is itself a chamber of the heart. Both play different roles in the normal physiology of the heart.
