Key Difference: ASPCA is one of the oldest non-profit organization that has dedicated itself with preventing cruelty against animals. SPCA is a humane society group that was established in 1824 in England to protect carriage horses from cruelty.

Many non-profit organizations have crept up that are dedicating themselves to protecting and caring for animals. These organizations have made it their goal to help the helpless animals. They provide shelter, food, medical care and even adoption services. There are many different little shelters as well as huge corporations, such as PETA, ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), The Humane Society, etc. Similarity in names have resulted in a lot of confusion regarding which corporation belongs to whom. ASPCA and SPCA may seem like sister corporations; however, they are actually two different entities.

ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is one of the oldest non-profit organization that has dedicated itself with preventing cruelty against animals. It was started in 1866 and claims its mission as, “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” It is a national organization that fights for the welfare of the animals and believes that animals should not be treated with cruelty; however, they don’t disapprove people using animals as food, rather they just being mistreated. The organization works to rescue animals that are being mistreated and it also passes laws to protect animals. In certain states, ASPCA also has rights to fine and punish people that hurt animals.

SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a humane society group that was established in 1824 in England to protect carriage horses from cruelty. SPCA is now found in many nations in small and large shelters. Many shelters also associate with SPCA and carry a certificate by them to prove that they associate with the SPCA. These groups campaign for animal welfare, assist in cruelty to animals cases, and attempt to find new homes for unwanted animals they feel are adoptable. The main difference one must understand between SPCA and ASPCA is that they are not related, nor is ASPCA an American branch of the SPCA. Although, it is believed it may have branched out from SPCA at one point, today it is not associated in anyway with SPCA. The funding for SPCA is from local donations and is government funded.
